Stick shift, also known as a manual transmission, is a type of transmission system found in cars where the driver manually changes gears using a gear stick or lever. Unlike an automatic transmission, which shifts gears automatically, a manual transmission requires the driver to use the clutch pedal and gear stick to select the appropriate gear based on the speed and driving conditions.

Most manual vehicles have an "H" shaped gear shift pattern because it allows the driver to easily access all of the gears using a single lever. The vertical row of gears is usually used for selecting the forward gears (1st, 2nd, 3rd, etc.), while the horizontal row is used for selecting the reverse gear.
